The Girl Circus camp season is over! We travelled to Lopez Island, Portland, and all the way to downtown Eugene this year for three week-long summer camps, with almost a hundred participants between the ages of 5 and 15! Spreading self-confidence, strength, and Girl Power all through the Pacific Northwest! All of this would not be possible without the help of our sponsors, donors, and Girl Circus family. We'd like to thank all of you for your support, and extend a special thanks to: The Oregon Country Fair The Little Church The WoW Hall Oregon Cultural Trust Lane Arts Council

When I created Girl Circus in 2001 it was my aim to improve gender equity in theater, circus, directing, producing, script writing and pay for female artists in Oregon - my small but potent sphere of influence. Fifteen years later it is as relevant and as essential - I stay strong in my commitment to #genderequity and female performers. The power of circus skills and athleticism to create body confidence in girls is undeniable! Sign up for camp TODAY!
Throwback Thursday from the 2004 show Girl Circus goes to Italy! Ravioli ravioli. The spotlit ravioli is Daisy, long time Girl Circus Corps member. Daisy will graduate from high school in June! Time flies when you're having fun with Girl Circus. SIGN UP for our monthly newsletter today!
Girl Circus is getting ready for the Country Fair! We just had our first rehearsal this past weekend at Bounce Gym in Eugene with members of the Girl Circus Corps, and it was a delight. It's so good to work with all the Girl Circus family and see how professional, energetic, and enthusiastic even our youngest members are. We've also been at work writing this year's show, and it's going to be a good one! We've got a new theme (and a new score by GC composer Dave Bender) that we can't talk about too much yet, but I think that this show is going to blow people's minds. Until next time, enjoy these rehearsal photos from times past and don't forget to sign up for one of our camps!
Girl Circus's second ever show was performed in 2002 at the Oregon Country fair. I've searched our archives for pictures, but as this show took place before the widespread use of digital cameras, I was only able to find a few pictures taken on film. Feast your eyes on this picture from Girl Circus' "The Corset Show" featuring female members of noted circus group UMO and members of the Royale Famille du Caniveaux! This 14-year-old photo features many female circus/vaudeville performers of the Northwest and Girl Circus alums: Esther Edelman, aerialist and circus instructor Janet McAlpin, cofounder of UMO, clown and all round vaudevillian Martha Enson, artistic director of En-Joy productions and performer/director with Teatro ZinZanni Cathy Sutherland, co-director of the Moisture Festival and gymnastics coach at SANCA Rebecca Chace, noted author and vaudevillian
As Girl Circus grows, the Girl Circus Corps grows with it. Last year, we had thirty-one deeply committed girls between the ages of 7 and 15 in Girl Circus; almost all of them are returning this year to perform once again. These girls are true performers, strong, dedicated go-getters; the level of improvement and skill we've seen over the years is inspiring. From tumblers, to silk and trap artists, to ukulele players, the Corps members encompass all different aspects of circus arts. Last season, these girls performed at the Wildish Theater, the Oregon Country Fair, and the Umbrella Festival in Portland to rave reviews (such as this one from the Register-Guard) and sold-out crowds. Girl Circus loves the Corps and we can't wait to start preparing for our next fantastic show with them all!
